Fly Tying

Picture

GEORGE'S FLY  - from Carole

Hook size 8/10
Dark Maroon/green thread.
Dark Maroon/green Chenille or dubbing
Flashabou
Maroon/green Guinea Fowl - small dot
Copper wire
Cape hackle
1.         Crimp barb and set in vise
2.         Starting at the eye, wind on tying thread to bend of the hook.
3.         Tie in Guinea feather about 1/2 inch extending beyond the hook
4.         Tie in 4-6 pieces Flashabou, make them the same length as the feather
5.         Tie in a length of copper wire
6.         Remove some of the fibers from the end of a 4" each of chenille, tie in the bare section. (you can use dubbing at this point ). Take thread up to just behind the eye of the hook.
7.         Wind chenille over shank in tight turns, to the just behind the eye of the hook, about 1 eye length back. Secure and remove waste.
8.         Select a soft- fibered hackle and catch it in at the eye, heavy end, not the tip.
9.         Using Hackle pliers, wind it down the shank in evenly spaced turns, going in the opposite direction from the chenille, right to the tail.
10.       Wind the copper wire to the eye in evenly spaced turns, locking the hackle in place, remove excess wire and hackle.
11.       Build a small tapered head and cast off.
This is the fly I was using at the hatchery with great success.  My cousin's husband, George made this fly and had a lot of success with it and he wouldn't tell his fishing buddies what he was using, just said it was his fly, hence the name 'George's fly'.   The thing that is different about this one is the hackle is tied in at the front and wound backwards.

BLACK PENNELL

Supplies:
Hook : 8 - 14 (eight or ten is best)
Tail - Lady Amherst Pheasant Center Tail - orange (try to buy one that has a fair amount of black on the edges and this eliminates trimming)
Body - Black Floss
Ribs - Silver tinsel
Hackle - Black  (neck is best - thinner feathers)
Thread - Black
For the second fly we will use the same materials but will add on

Tie on thread at eye end then go back and tie on tail.
Tie on ribbing then floss.  Wind up floss towards eye leaving room for wings and hackle and secure.  Wind up ribbing and secure.  Add in hackle and tie off.

BLAE and BLACK
Wings - Duck Quill (dark gray or brown)
Same as above but add wings before hackle.

Chironomid

Hook:  Caddis curved  C49S      Size 18 to 8 your choice.  10 or 12 is probably good to learn on.
Beads:  2/32 for 18;  5/64 for 16;  3/32 for 14;  7/64 for 12;  1/8 for 10 and 8.
Thread:  Black and should be the 70 weight so it spins flat.  And also some Rusty brown for the collar also 70 weight.
Body: out of thin Holo silver or ASB.
Wire:  Red and small thin size.
Super Glue to seal the whole chrinonomid.

Add bead to hook and set in vice.  Add thread and side by side take the thread down to the tail.  Twist thread so it is flattened. Add ribbing then Holo.  Build up body with thread evenly getting thicker to the eye.  Wrap Holo then ribbing.  Whip finish then change to Rusty brown thread.  Build up collar then whip finish.  Seal with glue.

Gomphus

Hook:  10 Nympph
